Self-care
What i can do for myself
Stress and psychohygiene
“I check off two lines on the sheet and add 14 new ones, during which time i get 2 calls from clients and a kindergarten teacher. i need a break. I’m going to bed early tonight. Actually, no, i can’t make it till tomorrow. Maybe.”
What is stress? Where does it come from, how does it manifest itself in our bodies, behaviour and actions? How do i individually feel stress and when do i get into it? And how does the often cited multitasking and procrastination actually (not) help us? We will focus on how to “relieve” yourself and not carry the burden of work home. You’ll find inspiration on how you can help yourself acutely in the moment, as well as how you can take care of yourself in the long term, preventively.
Emotions
“Sometimes I’d like to turn all those feelings off, i hate it when i cry in front of others. I’m very embarrassed myself when i see someone crying or angry…And anyway, emotions don’t belong in work.”
Why is it important to pay attention to emotions? What place do they have in our lives and how do they relate to mental health? We will focus on how to deal with our own challenging emotions, while providing practical tips on how to respond to the emotions of others that affect us. Because emotions have a physical component as well as a psychological one, you will learn how paying attention to our own bodies can be helpful and take away ideas for specific techniques.
Anxiety
“I can feel my pulse racing and my hands starting to sweat…What if i make a bad decision in this project, what if i make a mistake and i can’t take it back. What if….”
Anxiety – fears that exhaust us, yet have no clear cause. It’s as if we’re constantly carrying a thirty-pound backpack on our backs, which doesn’t allow us to truly relax. Without having any idea what we are actually carrying. We will focus on what the anxiety (doesn’t) serve, what is going on inside us during the anxiety, and how we can tell that we are no longer able to cope with it on our own and it would help to turn to a professional. We will also offer practical tips on what you can do for yourself when anxiety overwhelms you.
Relaxation techniques
“I’d like so much to take a vacation from all this thought cycle sometimes, just for 10 minutes…”
Would you like to incorporate relaxation into your daily rhythm to help you effectively recharge your batteries, but you can’t or don’t know how to do it? Learn how to find a way that works best for you. To give you a truly varied repertoire to inspire you, you’ll have the opportunity to try out techniques based on a variety of research-proven psychological and psychotherapeutic trends, from mindfulness to autogenic training and many more.
Burnout
“I can’t anymore. Every day i have to struggle for a long time to get out of bed. I’m tired of going to volleyball with my friends. I’d rather just sit on the couch and have everyone leave me alone. i don’t have the energy for anything. And i don’t really care.”
Burnout does not happen overnight, but it is a gradual, sometimes quite subtle process. If we learn to recognise the warning signs, we can prevent the worst from happening early. Prevention is the best way, of course. How do we function in an environment that constantly demands performance from us? How to recover effectively? What are all the components of our lives that we need to saturate in order to thrive and withstand all the pressure?
